Unused Prescription Drugs Disposal
Proper Disposal of Unused Prescription Drugs and Sharps
Federal prescription drug disposal guidelines urge Americans to follow the instructions listed below when disposing of prescription drugs:
  • Take unused, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs out of their original containers.
  • Mix the prescription drugs with an undesirable substance, like used coffee grounds or kitty litter and put them in impermeable, nondescript containers, such as empty cans or sealable bags, further ensuring that the drugs are not diverted or accidentally ingested by children or pets.
  • Throw these containers in the trash.
CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, Kroger and Winn-Dixie sell postage-paid envelopes ($3.99) that allow customers to mail unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications to Sharp Compliance's Texas facility for disposal.
Controlled substances are excluded from the program.
