Designing / Locating Compost Piles
The Earth Machine (a manufactured composting bin)Placing a Compost Pile
Compost piles should be located in shaded areas, as this will help prevent drying out during the summer. A good location will also have the following:
  • Access to a water source
  • Plenty of area for storage
  • Adequate work area around the pile
  • Good drainage
  • Close proximity to where the finished compost will be used

Helpful Tips
Avoid areas that will interfere with lawn and garden activities, and don't located the pile near any wells. Be a good neighbor - make your composting area attractive or keep it out of your neighbors' view.

Bin / Pile Construction
The ideal size for a composting bin / pile is a three foot cube, as this ensures that it:
  • Promotes sufficient aeration
  • Retains sufficient heat to maintain warm temperatures

Keep in mind:
piles larger than a five-foot cube are difficult to turn and tend to become anaerobic in the center.

Manufactured Bins
