Rising 80 feet above the highest point of the Welsh Mountains, the overlook provides
a 360-degree panoramic view of the Conestoga and Brandywine valleys.
A scenic overlook was opened in July 2001 to be used by the public as a
recreational area.
The overlook area includes a picnic pavillion, a hitching post for
horse drawn carriages and two binocular stations. Area residents have
used the overlook for picnicing, bird watching, flying kites and radio-controlled
gliders and viewing the surrounding countryside. The overlook is
located on top of the closed area B site of the landfill and is open
to the public from May through October on Sunday afternoons from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Area
B was used as a municipal waste landfill from 1991 until 2000, when
it was closed and capped.
Overlook Enhancements
In 2002 we built another
pavillion with two more picnic tables and to add a bicycle rack at
the scenic overlook. A hiking trail around the perimeter of Lanchester is also in the planning
stages.
